“Bro, how big is your vineyard?”“How big? well, all you can see is our vineyard.”Owner of Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine, Jipei Hong answered our question straightforwardly. Indeed, looking down from Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine, a vast vineyard belongs to it. Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine has not only a large vineyard but also a history of more than 50 years. It is one of the wineries pioneered to make wine. According to the media, “Putao wine” from Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine has won 6 gold, 7 silver medals and one 1st prize. It is also the first Taiwanese wine served in French Michelin Restaurants. Seeing such a great record, we assume the wine lovers would like to come and check it out. Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine had been the contractual production area of Taiwan Provincial Monopoly Bureau, TPMB, (current Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Company Ltd.) since 1965. There were 450 hectares of vineyards in the prime time. Jipei HONG’s grandfather was the grape farmer who pioneered to join the contractual farming and owned the largest vineyard. TPMB stopped the grape contractual farming in 1996 but Jipei HONG didn’t want to give up the vineyard to get subsidy for other crops so that he continued to grow grapes. In 2002, winemaking by private sector was allowed and The Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan started giving wineries in the villages instructions and Jipei HONG immediately sent the application to set up Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine and named the Domaine after his grandfather. The shop is not magnificent or splendid but wine connoisseurs know this place has fine wine and quality grapes. Products of the Domaine are not sold in other channels. We saw regular customers come into the store and they usually left with several bottles of wine. Coming to the Domaine, tourists can visit the fruit garden but fruit picking is not allowed because the varietals in Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine are wine grapes, not table grapes. We followed Jipei HONG walking down the hills and saw green grapes hanging on the vines whose age may be older than us and witnessed the history of Taiwan wine industry. Wanna see the big green grapes? Come in mid July when the grapes are ripe and ready for harvest, the view of the garden is very beautiful. Though fruit picking is not available, tourists can still visit the winery. After being instructed by the Council of Agriculture for years, The Agriculture and Food Agency, Farmers’ Association and experts, the wine making equipment in Shu Sheug Leisure Domaine is state of the art, and through the introduction, tourists can easily understand the skills and process of wine making. Seeing many French imported barrels in the winery, I couldn’t help getting excited being here by the pride of Taiwan. Photo: Grape varietals are Black Queen Muscat and Golden Muscat that are not table grapes. Photo: The barrels are stacked in the winery and they are all imported. Because of caring of the grapes, his eyes get exposed to the sunlight for years and that has impact on his vision. So he always wears the sunglasses to protect the eyes and therefore he is always in a cool look. If you and friends are interested in wine, welcome to make a reservation for a group tour. Either groups or families are welcomed to feel the charm of Taiwan wine, and learn the wine making process. Also, bring a bottle of fine wine to your taste home. Don’t miss it because there is no second place to find their products. Photo: Jipei HONG is amiable and willing to share.
