Experience a Day in the Life of Mao'ao Fishing Village's Ama (Sea Women)!

The "Ama" (sea women) culture is not only found in Japan or Korea. In the small and ancient fishing village of Mao'ao on Taiwan's northeast coast, traditional fishing village scenery and unique sea women culture have been preserved. For over a hundred years, residents have primarily made their living through abalone aquaculture or fishing. The name "Mao'ao" is said to come from the bay's shape when viewed from above, which resembles the Chinese character "卯" (mao).

Walking into Mao'ao fishing village, the community preserves traditional stone houses and coastal landscapes, offering village tours and local cuisine to promote local culture. If you have more time to spare, you can visit the Satoumi School to participate in fishing village experience activities and DIY agar jelly-making, learning about the lifestyle of local sea men and women and understanding the harvesting of Gelidium (agar seaweed), experiencing the wisdom of residents' Satoumi lifestyle.
