Taitung County

The county also includes two offshore islands—Green Island and Orchid Island—each known for distinctive agricultural products and rich Indigenous cultures.
Recommended Itineraries and Experiences

Golden Rice Fields and Cycling Adventures
The northern end of Taitung's mountainous route connects to Hualien's longitudinal valley plain, where Chishang Township and Guanshan Township stand as Taiwan's foremost rice-producing regions, with Chishang’s Mr. Brown Avenue especially renowned for its seas of golden rice. Here, you can cycle freely through pole-free rice fields, feeling fully immersed in the countryside. The best times to see these golden rice paddies are May to June and late October through November.
Transportation: Take the train to Chishang or Guanshan Station. You’ll find YouBike services and bicycle rentals near both stations, making it easy to explore the rural landscape on two wheels.

Savoring Luye Red Oolong Tea
Tea lovers should head south to Luye Township, the main production area for Red Oolong. At Luye Highlands, you can visit local tea gardens such as Linwang Tea Factory and the Xinyuanchang Black Tea Industry Cultural Center, try tea picking, learn tasting techniques, and experience the tea’s signature honeyed and ripe-fruit aromas.

Pacific Coast and Fishing Harbor Adventures
Taitung’s coastal route includes the East Coast National Scenic Area and the South Link Highway, where rugged rock formations meet deep blue seas. Sanxiantai is the most iconic stop, while nearby Chenggong Fishing Harbor is one of Taiwan’s key ports for mahi-mahi and sailfish.
Chenggong preserves a traditional and sustainable sailfish spearfishing practice. During the strong autumn and winter monsoon season, seasoned fishermen stand at the bow holding spears weighing tens of kilograms, scanning the waves before striking—an impressive display of human resolve against the sea. When visiting Chenggong, be sure to try freshly sliced sashimi and sailfish dishes—the freshness is truly unforgettable.
Transportation: Take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle to Chenggong Township or Sanxiantai.

South-Link Railway and Tribal Cuisine
Southern Taitung offers pristine forests, dramatic coastlines, and Indigenous villages. From August to September, Taimali’s Daylily Mountain bursts into orange blooms, creating a spectacular seasonal panorama. For a deeper cultural experience, visit the Millet School in Jinfeng Township, tucked into the mountains, where you can make abai by hand—a traditional dish of millet and pork wrapped in shell ginger leaves, similar in texture to zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and rich with earthy, wild aromas.
