Commonly called the Formosan cherry blossom, this popular species has the most vibrantly colored flowers of them all. Its flowers bloom downward in the shape of a bell. Single-layer cherry flowers usually bloom in Dec., followed by double-layer flowers in Jan-Feb.
Somei Yoshino, the most popular variety in Japan whose flowers are white tingled with the palest pink, is only found in a few higher altitude locations in Taiwan such as Yangmingshan and Alishan due to climate conditions. This shape of this single-layer sakura’s is depicted as the typical pattern of all cherry blossoms.
