Every year from March to May is the season when the blossom of tung flowers puts on all the way through the regions of Keelung to Yulin in Western Taiwan and the entire Eastern Taiwan. Tung oil tree is a plant which has been widely introduced and planted since Japanese-Occupied Period, especially in the mountains of Hsinchu and Miaoli. It was a part of the economic resource of local residents in the early days. As one of the languages of flowers of tung blossom is “to be content and joyful”, signifying the industrious, simple spirit of Hakka people, it has become the representative symbol of Hakka culture. Miaoli County, where “Hakka Tung Blossom Festival” is held annually based on local characteristics of diversified agricultural products, bountiful Hakka culture, and tung flowers, is an awesome place that many like to go for appreciating flowers, taking light trips, and experiencing farming tours.

Tung Blossom Viewing: The Hakka Compound
Most of the tung flowers bloom in the month of May during spring season. It is also called “May Snow” because they look like snowflakes at first glance from afar. Inside Miaoli “Maolimiaow Tung Blossom Theme Park” planted a mass of tung trees whose number ranks the top in the whole country. “The Hakka Compound”, which has been jointly conceived and designed by traditional craftsmen and modern architects based on the integration of classic and contemporary architectural aesthetics, is another highlight of the site. The public is able to experience thoroughly the humanism, perseverance, diligent spirit of Hakka people, together with the beauty of conventional architectural pattern within the 990 square-meter Hakka three-section compound.

Whereas the board attached to the wall on top of “The Hakka Compound” reads “from guests to family” from right to left in accordance with ancient writing order, the spring couplet scroll below indicates “Miaoli is the home for residing visitors”. This describes the idea of Hakka people who determined to settle down after having arrived in the area of Miaoli. Many traditional artifacts such as vanity, old-fashioned wooden armchair, straw rain cape, even “turtle shell cape” worn by ancient farmers for preventing themselves from being cut while weeding and getting wet in the rain, and etc. are displayed inside the building. Several limericks whose profound meanings can only be realized by interpreting in Hakka language are posted on the walls. In addition to tung trees and flowers, camphor trees, ‎Taiwan acacias, phoebe zhennans, scarlet sages, and other lovely landscaping plants are also planted and set up in outdoor area, creating varied auras and styles in every corner.

The Feast of Strawberries: Dahu Farmer’s Association Distillery
To strawberry enthusiasts, Miaoli “Dahu Farmer’s Association Distillery” is one of the tourism spots they should never leave out. Apart from the most celebrated strawberry wine, there are many other fascinating products including strawberry jams, strawberry vinegar, strawberry cream puffs, and fresh sausage sold in strawberry cultural hall on the first floor. There are even fresh strawberries in ration during the growing season; the restaurant on the fourth floor allows visitors to sample specialty dishes made from strawberries; staffs at strawberry ecological exhibition area will instruct the relevant knowledge of strawberry ecology, strawberry history, strawberry breeding and harvesting, and the way of eating strawberries. At the back of strawberry cultural hall is the nostalgic wine-making center where deliberate productive process can be discovered. Through the large glass window, the public can observe wine-brewing steps including pretreatment preparations, fermentation and storage of middle section, and the final filling and bottling.

“Dahu Farmer’s Association Distillery” is one of the rural wineries established under the assistance of Council of Agriculture and the world’s third, Asia’s first origin of strawberry wine production. Aside from empowering the agriculturists to advance from cultivating crops to brewing wine, it is hoped that mass society can increase and foster correct knowledge and culture of wine tasting. Thanks to the development of refined agriculture which stresses on strict control wine-making quality, constant improvement of wine-brewing technology, and requirement of high-grade texture, the brand of “Dahu Farmer’s Association Distillery” still raises its prestige in the global village and becomes another “pride of Taiwan” even though the country is adversely affected by the initiation of WTO.

Aromatic Sweet Herbs: Flower Home Leisure Farm
Set off from Dahu and connect to the 3rd Taiwan Provincial Road bound for Miaoli Zhuolan Township before arriving at the popular sightseeing spot for family trip, the “Flower Home Leisure Farm”. Mr. Chen, the owner of the farm believes that excellent agricultural technology is the key to consistent sustainability. Not only has he planted intensively various types of plants but also mapped out conscientiously the first “Essential Oil Museum” countrywide.
